We describe an ultra-wide-bandwidth, low-frequency receiver recently installed on the Parkes radio telescope. The receiver system provides continuous frequency coverage from 704 to 4032 MHz. For much of the band ( ${\sim}60\%$ ), the system temperature is approximately 22 K and the receiver system remains in a linear regime even in the presence of strong mobile phone transmissions. We discuss the scientific and technical aspects of the new receiver, including its astronomical objectives, as well as the feed, receiver, digitiser, and signal processor design. We describe the pipeline routines that form the archive-ready data products and how those data files can be accessed from the archives. The system performance is quantified, including the system noise and linearity, beam shape, antenna efficiency, polarisation calibration, and timing stability.

The paper examines the changing nature of publicity in the courts, tracing three distinct but interconnected phases of publicity using Jeremy Bentham's theory of open justice and publicity as a framework. The first phase is press coverage, with the news media chronicling the justice system for the general population, most recently including televised court proceedings. The second is the appointment of Courts Information Officers, occurring as early as the 1930s and growing in impact since the 1990s, established to facilitate the relationship between courts and the news media. The third and final phase is the Internet, including social media, resulting in changes to news media models and driving contemporary practices of court-generated media. The paper concludes that, while media and communication practices have changed radically since the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and the concept of publicity has shifted, Bentham's approach to open justice remains salient for twenty-first-century courts’ communication.

Summary
Play is an important developmental tool, rather than just an informal aspect of childhood. While children's actions are purposeful activities that help them make sense of their world (Ebbeck & Waniganayake, 2010), they are often misconstrued as messing about without purpose. This chapter addresses the theoretical aspects of play and describes how play supports child development. It discusses play in both the pre-school and school setting and play pedagogies to support science education.
OBJECTIVES
At the end of this chapter you will be able to:

The importance of play
The importance of play is assured through the work of many theorists. Froebel (1826) felt that ‘play is the purest, most spiritual activity of man’ (p. 3). He put his ideas about play into practice by creating the first schools for pre-school children, which he called ‘kindergarten’ (children's garden). These kindergartens stressed the natural growth of children through action or play, with the emphasis on pedagogies that encouraged and guided. Froebel also developed a range of practical resources to support children's play, which he called ‘gifts’, and educational activities, which he called ‘occupations’. Many of the practical educational resources used today originated or were developed from Froebel's ideas.
Rousseau (1911), in his work Emile, believed that children should be allowed to develop through play free from the restrictions imposed by society, and that early pedagogies should provide a balance between individual freedom and happiness and control from society. Most importantly, Rousseau stressed the importance of personalised learning, emphasising that adults and the context should accommodate the individual child rather than the child be expected to change to suit the adult or context. Child-centred learning and experiential learning, central to both play and scientific development, are legacies of Rousseau's theories.
Piaget looked at the development of play in children and identified four different types (Dockett & Fleer, 2002; Piaget, 1976): functional play involving the repeated use of objects or actions, constructive play involving the manipulation of objects to build or construct something, pretend or symbolic play where imaginary situations replace real ones, and rule-governed play that is used in games.

Children's actions are often misconstrued as messing about without purpose as opposed to the purposeful activities we engage in throughout life. Play is of great use in early childhood, and is of value to professionals. This chapter addresses the theoretical aspects of play and its support of child development. It discusses play in the pre-school to Grade 2 school curriculum and the role of the professional in play pedagogies.

The importance of play is assured through the work of many theorists. Rousseau (1911) in his work ‘Emile’ identified his belief that children should be allowed to develop through play free from the restrictions imposed by society, and that early pedagogies should provide a balance between individual freedom and happiness and control from society. Most importantly, Rousseau (1911) stressed the importance of personalised learning, emphasising that adults and the context should accommodate the individual child rather than the child be expected to change to suit the adult or context. Rousseau's influence has stretched over the centuries, and it is not surprising that he is regarded as the ‘Father of Education’. Child-centred and experiential learning, central to both play and scientific development, are legacies of Rousseau's theories.

This study focused on issues of concern to and service needs of older parents caring for an adult son or daughter with an acquired brain injury (ABI) in Ontario. Three issues were identified as particularly challenging: diagnosis of the brain injury, parents’ feelings about the cause of the brain injury, and planning for long-term accommodation for their family member with a brain injury. The most frequently cited services needed for the person with ABI were social and/or recreational activities, day programs, and residential placement. The most frequently cited services needed by parents were parent education and support groups. The information gathered provides a base for further research in other sectors. Implications of these initial findings for clinical practice and policy and program development are discussed.

The study examines the effects of nursing practices on the duration of lactation in middle-class American women. Thirty-two nursing mothers were followed for 2 years post-partum, data being collected at eight home visits by interview and by nursing records kept by the mothers. Those women who nursed frequently (>8/day) during exclusive breastfeeding remained amenorrhoeic longer than infrequent nursers, introduced supplements later and did not resume menses as promptly thereafter. They continued an hour or more of night nursing during supplemented nursing. Duration of exclusive nursing and night nursing after supplementation were the major influences on duration of amenorrhoea. Mothers' age, weight-for-height, and nursing frequency before supplementation showed no significant effect but night nursing after supplementation was a major factor in post-supplementation duration of amenorrhoea. Those women who both supplemented later and maintained an hour of night nursing after supplementing remained amenorrhoeic for 6–10 months longer than those who supplemented early and/or reduced subsequent night nursing.

Mouthpart and proventriculus structure of the brachyuran crab Nectocarcinus tuberculosus was described by scanning electron microscopy and histology and characteristics indicative of dietary preferences were identified. A qualitative stomach content analysis was conducted to verify structural interpretations with respect to diet. The mouthparts and proventriculus of N. tuberculosus have features that are typical of macrophagous crabs and are consistent with a carnivorous diet of hard items. However, the mandibular arrangement indicates that N. tuberculosus is also adapted to ingest soft plant material and fleshy items, revealing that this crab is omnivorous which is consistent with its habitat of rocky shores and sea grass beds. Carnivorous features of the feeding apparatus include large crista dentata on the third maxillipeds that grip food items during ingestion and cuspidate setae on the second maxillipeds and first maxillae. Nectocarcinus tuberculosus has a complex arrangement of proventricular ossicles, 5-denticulated accessory teeth, and a spiny cardio-pyloric valve with rough, calcified protuberances. It has a robust, strongly calcified gastric mill with a prominent anterior cusp and 11 roughly surfaced vertical ridges on each lateral tooth specialized for crushing and grinding. In contrast to true carnivorous crabs, the mandibles in this species are symmetrically arranged, with two sharp cutting edges and no teeth, an arrangement adapted to cut softer plant-like materials and flesh. Structural interpretations with respect to diet were confirmed by stomach content analysis where items identified included gastropods, bivalves and the sea grass Posidonia australis. Functionally, the filtering system in the proventriculus of N. tuberculosus is complex. The cardiac stomach has a well developed ventral filtration system or ‘cardiac filter’ which comprises coarse and fine filters. Different modifications of setation between the distal and proximal regions of the inner valve of the pyloric filter are unique to this crab species, with an intersetule width 600 nm in the distal region and 80–100 nm in the proximal region. This suggests that some differentiation in filtration occurs between regions within the pyloric filter.

A cooperative program has been established to produce a reference frame of at least 400 suitable extragalactic sources. This is an extension of collaborative efforts (Johnston et al., Russell et al., Ma et al., and Reynolds et al.) reported at this meeting. In Phase One, a catalog of radio source positions will be constructed using original VLBI observations already obtained by NASA, NGS, NRL, JPL and USNO. Observations will be re-reduced in a consistent system to avoid some of the more serious problems associated with the formation of compilation catalogs. In Phase Two, the USNO will maintain the system, including the monitoring of source structure and/or variation. During both phases cooperation among the various agencies will continue. A list of sources will be made available to optical observers so that the frame will have benchmarks in both the optical and radio regimes.

The celestial positions of extragalactic radio sources may be determined to a precision of less than a milliarcsecond. Further, since these sources are believed to be at great distances from the galaxy, little or no proper motion is expected on scales of order a milliarcsecond. Therefore a reference frame based on the positions of carefully selected sources so that display compact radiation on scales less than a milliarcsecond will noticeably improve the precision of present celestial reference frames. If the radio objects making up the reference frame also emit radiation at optical wavelengths, and assuming the optical/radio radiation is coincident, the radio frame can update the optical frame to the accuracy of the individual optical positions.
Dietary management of obesity: evaluation of the time-energy displacement diet in terms of its efficacy and nutritional adequacy for long-term weight control

1. An unsupplemented 4200 kJ (1000 kcal) diet emphasizing large quantities of relatively unrefined complex carbohydrates was evaluated among sixty obese adults for its effectiveness and nutritional adequacy in a long-term weight-control programme. Patients were followed individually as outpatients by a physician and dietician–an average of thirteen visits over 26 weeks. Assessment of health indices included anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, lipid levels and assays for seven vitamins, β–carotene and iron.
2. Weight loss averaged 8.2 kg or 24% of excess weight during the 6 months of active treatment. Over an average of 17 months of post-treatment follow-up, 44% of patients continued to lose weight and 92% remained below pretreatment levels.
3. Average skinfold thickness fell 7mm (p < 0·001) whereas muscle mass was maintained (arm muscle circumference+10mm, not significant; creatinine-height index + 3% of standard (Bistrian et al. 1975; not significant). Systolic and diastolic bleed pressure fell 7 and 5 mmHg respectively (P < 0·01). Total serum cholesterol and triglyceridesfell 200 and 660 mg/1 respectively (P < 0·01), while high-density-lipoprotein-cholesterol remained statistically unchanged. Mean serum levels of retinol, β-carotene, folate, vitamin B12, ascorbic acid, Fe and transferrin saturation, and activity coefficients for thiamin, riboflavin and pyridoxine were within normal limits after periods of treatment ranging from 5 to 84 weeks.
4. An earlier age of onset of obesity tended to be associated with greater weight lossduring treatment and lesser weight rebound during follow-up.
5. The results indicate that the experimental diet, without supplementation, was nutritionally adequate as well as effective for long-term weight control.
